Is this Collaborative?

The case seems to be that I am not able to collaborate with the officers and staff of TESOL. I am not sure how I could get so much accomplished in such a very brief amount of time (17 months and counting) were that true. But here are some examples of my communication with staff. Please feel free to analyze the discourse carefully and thank you again. If you would like to see more, just contact me.

Hi Cindy and Jamie,

Thanks for your work on scheduling for the convention -- a very complicated matter I think. The meeting at 4 pm sounds fine, but I wonder why the SPC is not included since we'll just have to report to them later anyway. Also, I got a message from Jun recently that said he will join the Essential Teacher meeting with Chuck and others in the morning from 10:30-11:30. In earlier correspondence with Cindy we informally set the afternoon for this meeting. Naturally, we can accommodate a morning meeting, but it breaks up the flow of our regular business meeting considerably. If possible, we'd like to get done with most of the pressing ET business in the morning and clear the agenda in order to deal with the other matters in the afternoon. I've already invited the SPC to join this part of our meeting and they can only come in the afternoon. I know this will mess things up for you, but if possible could we meet with Jun and HO staff after lunch rather than before lunch?

Sorry again for the bother. Let me know if you can/can't swing it and thank you in advance for your efforts.

Best regards,

Tim

Dear Tim and Suresh:

I invite both of you to meet with the Executive Committee (Elliot Judd, Sandy Briggs, and myself), along with staff members, Chuck Amorosino, Cindy Flynn, Carol Edwards, and Craig Triplett, on Tuesday, March 20, at 4 pm, at the Sheraton Admiral Room during the convention week. The meeting will provide an opportunity to discuss issues of mutual interest and concern. The meeting has been scheduled for an hour and a half, if needed.

Best,

Jun Liu

Excuse the intrusion. Who should I contact about the NY, NY convention and getting an ET spotlight session up there next April? Always nice visiting with you at the convention Craig. Hang in there, your work is greatly appreciated by those of us who know the load you bear.

Best,

Tim

Thanks Tomiko. There was some confusion amongst our members at the Seattle meeting and in my own brain too. You're doing a great job. Thank you very much for all of your help.

I already ensure that there is a link to a Compleat Links article in every TC issue. As Cindy has suggested, the links are rotated every issue so a different article features in each TC. The link for the article on bullying appeared in the 3/15 issue of TC; the 4/20 issue will include the link for the article “TESOL Caucuses Are about Who We Are.”

There is also a “Write for ET” item that runs in every TC. You can find it in any previous issue—is there any preference for whether we run the usual, or the new one Cindy has written?

Hi again,

I wanted to thank you all for informing me of the board's decision. Obviously, I feel it is a wise one and I appreciate everyone's sensitivity to this matter and dedication to the association. I believe this marks an encouraging new beginning for more open communication and relations within the association. One idea that came up in the flurry of emails with ET staff was that of possibly doing a summer online issue of ET in order to keep the number of issues at four per volume year. We haven't talked about this at all but it could merit consideration in March. My initial thought is that this might draw people to the TESOL and ET Web site and might allow for different types of articles with audio, video and hyperlinks to appear in the publication. But I'm not sure.

Until March then.

Best regards,

Tim

Hi everyone,

I hope this business about me being fired as editor won't affect getting the LessonPlans@ET up and running. The future looks bright.

And a lovely day it is here today too.

Enjoy your weekend all.

Best,

Tim

That is all for now, but I have scores of similar messages. You be the judge on my collaborative capacity. I do manage a number of editors, columnists and TESOL authors every day. Somehow they don't seem to complain about my ability or style. In fact, I can produce a mountain of compliments in the very short time I have filled this role.
